Artist Statement

Leslie Reichert

My portraits explore inner character through actions relatable to the divine light of faith. Sports, careers, food, and hobbies can be experiences that transcend us from the physical world into a desired state of mind. The idea I am trying to express is the relationship of people to the divine. Gold leaf surrounding the figures represents the inner light of faith, comparable to gold used during the Middle Ages in illuminated manuscripts and Christian iconography. The figures I have used signify ordinary activities conducted on a day to day basis.

The contour lines of my figures led me to choose a stained glass effect. The outline will resemble stained glass, similar to the way saints are depicted in Gothic Catholic Cathedrals. Debora Coombs is an inspiring contemporary artist who paints on glass that I have been studying throughout my painting process. The faded lines in the drapery is one way I express the stained glass effect in my work.

During my recent visit to Florence, Italy, I became inspired by Medieval art history. I was drawn to the religious artwork and depiction of divine light in Christian artwork. My catholic background provided me with a foundation to build on. I chose my immediate family members portraying characteristics of the saints. These are the people closest to me who appear to me as saints on a daily basis.
